Smelt Protective Garments
Multi-hazard personal protection with improved comfort and efficiency
Employees working around chemical recovery boilers are continuously exposed to serious safety hazards caused by hot liquor and smelt. Valmet’s new Smelt Protective Garments offer boiler operators, smelt deck workers, maintenance personnel, and recovery area inspectors a protection against heat, burn, and corrosive injuries. Unlike the conventional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Valmet Smelt Protective Garments is an investment on safety and comfortability which is further leading to improved productivity with less insurance costs, easier employee recruitment, permanence and the branch imago overall.
Comprehensive protection against various hazards
55% lighter 60% thinner
80% better breathability
Long lifetime - high resistance to wear and tear
How does protective garments work?
The flame-resistant PPE was designed for personnel working in recovery boiler maintenance and operations. The garment sheds smelt so that burns to the wearer are mitigated. GORE® PYRAD® technology is not a flame-retardant chemical treatment or coating and will not wear off over time. Instead, the PPE fabric is durable and will sustain a stable char over the life of the product without flaking or disintegration.
Thoroughly tested to ensure protection against burns or injury caused by smelt splash
Valmet is the exclusive distributor of GORE® PYRAD® Smelt Protective Garments, earlier also known as Vulcan smelt safety garments. Personal protection equipment (PPE) made with GORE® PYRAD® Vulcan smelt protective laminate has been rigorously tested to ensure it performs and protects as intended. Under standard test methods for evaluating total heat energy (ASTM F955), the Smelt Protective Garments effectively protected against burns or injury caused by smelt splash. (Tests performed with 500g (1.1lbs) of molten smelt at temperatures of 843°C (1550°F).
The garmets are CE marked (compliant in EN ISO 11612:2015, A1, A2, C1, D3, E5, F1), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified (Annex 4 product class II), ASTM F1868/ISO 11092 (evaporative resistance-breathability), ASTM D6413 (flame resistance of textiles), California Prop 65 and ASTM F1930 (Pyromantm).

Smelt protective garments are vital personal protective equipment (PPE) for professionals working in the demanding environments of recovery boilers within the pulp and energy industries. These garments are specifically designed to safeguard workers from severe hazards such as molten smelt, hot black liquor, intense radiant heat and heat stroke in prolonged working at hot conditions —risks that are commonly present during chemical recovery operations.
Recovery boilers represent some of the most hazardous conditions in industrial settings. In these high-risk environments, smelt protective garments serve as a critical layer of defense. They help shield workers from molten smelt splash, liquor blowback, extreme radiant temperatures, and potential flame exposure. The garments are designed not only to reduce the risk of serious injuries and burns but also to promote a safer and more secure working environment for anyone involved in recovery boiler operations.
The protective features of these garments are extensive. Made from advanced heat-resistant materials, they offer consistent thermal and flame resistance, maintaining their integrity under extreme conditions. Durability is a key benefit, as these garments are built for repeated use in harsh boiler rooms, with reinforced stitching and rugged construction that stands up to both heat and corrosive chemicals over time.
Despite their high-performance protection, smelt protective garments are lightweight and ergonomically designed for comfort and mobility. Workers can perform boiler inspections, cleaning, and maintenance tasks with ease, thanks to flexible materials and careful tailoring that supports full range of motion. Available in various forms—including jackets, pants, long coats, and hoods—these garments provide full-body coverage. Options for layering and accessory use allow teams to adjust protection levels according to task-specific risks.
Smelt protective garments are offered in a wide range of sizes, typically from Small to 6XL, ensuring that every worker has access to gear that fits well and offers complete coverage. This attention to sizing helps enhance safety and comfort across diverse teams.
In the pulp and energy sectors, smelt protective garments are commonly used by recovery boiler operators, shutdown and maintenance crews, black liquor processing teams, safety inspectors in recovery areas, and personnel responsible for chemical recovery systems. As industrial safety standards continue to evolve, this specialized gear plays an increasingly important role in reducing lost-time injuries, boosting worker confidence, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. By minimizing the likelihood of accidents, it also contributes to smoother operations and fewer unplanned disruptions.
