Södra Cell Värö goes big – gets ready to deliver jumbo bales with a baling line upgrade delivered by Valmet

Södra Cell Värö and Valmet have been cooperating for decades. One of the latest successful joint projects was a baling line upgrade, which enabled Värö mill to start delivering jumbo bales to its customers. With a production capacity of 780,000 tons per year, Södra Cell’s Värö mill is one of the largest and most modern softwood pulp mills in the world. Located in western Sweden, it also serves as an important supplier of green energy, generating 1.6 TWh annually.

Customer request leads to baling line upgrade

In 2023, the Värö mill responded to customer needs and started preparations for jumbo bale deliveries. A jumbo bale is a stack of four regular bales. To do so, the mill needed to update its equipment and turned to Valmet for a competitive solution.

“Our solution included two Valmet Wire Tyers with conveyors and integrated guard rails, two wire cages with four wire stands and two wire cones, and one spare Wire tyer, together with related safety equipment and a test frame for Wire tyer. In addition to delivering the equipment to site, we were responsible for mechanical and electrical assembly, commissioning and start-up including a test run,” says Johanna Lindqvist, Project Manager at Valmet.

“Due to some project plan finetuning along the way, our team had to push hard to meet the expected deadline for start-up. Also, the close cooperation and open communication between the Värö mill staff and Valmet enabled us to finish the assembly on time, which I’m extremely proud of. It wouldn’t have been possible without jointly set targets and the trust that has been built over the years,” she adds.

The new line was ready for commercial operation in the middle of May 2024.

Södra Cell Värö is very satisfied with the long-term cooperation and so also with the latest upgrade, Valmet has listened to our needs and wishes. Delivery and start-up have worked well, the equipment works well and is safe, which is important to us. This investment has enabled us to live up to our customers' wishes, says Jimmy Syrén, Department Manager for the pulp drying machine at Södra Cell Värö.

The secret behind success is consistency

Södra Cell Värö Mill was originally built over 50 years ago in 1972. Over the years, the mill’s three baling lines have been updated in numerous ways, including major rebuild and expansion projects executed in 2016 and 2022 respectively. Valmet has played a significant role in keeping the mill and its lines fit and ready to respond to changing customer needs by delivering many of the technologies in use at the mill today.

“Södra Cell Värö is an excellent example of how continuous development of the mill site pays off in performance – over the years, the consistent work has led to excellent results in optimizing pulp quality and production costs, and maximizing yield, environmental performance and energy efficiency. At Valmet, we value the long-lasting relationship with the Värö mill and always do our best to fulfill their expectations – or even exceed them,” says Peter Lindgren, Valmet’s Mill Sales Manager for Södra Cell Värö.
