Valmet ships record-sized Yankee cylinder
Sep 13, 2024
A spectacular transport is currently underway as Valmet ships a Yankee cylinder from its production site in Karlstad, Sweden to a customer in Europe. It is the largest cylinder ever manufactured in Karlstad, with a diameter of nearly seven meters and weighing more than 200 tons, which is 30 tons more than the second largest.
Transporting a cylinder of this weight and size is a major logistical challenge that requires careful planning and close cooperation between several different parties with various special vehicles.
The first stage from Valmet’s site down to the harbor was done with a special transport designed to carry extremely heavy loads and equipped with advanced hydraulics to balance and distribute the load as much as possible. The journey began late in the evening to avoid disrupting other traffic.
Once down at the port, preparations began to move the Yankee cylinder to the barge that will carry it across Lake Vänern and down to Denmark, where it will be transferred to a cargo ship. After a long day’s work, the cylinder was finally driven aboard the barge and secured to stand firmly in place during the journey across Lake Vänern.
Sea transport is the only possible transport route for such large and heavy loads, and safety is of course a top priority. There are many parameters to consider and evaluate, such as weather conditions, suitable shipping routes and locks, as well as the durability of roads for transport between the port and the final destination.
The transport demonstrates how advanced technology, together with competent personnel and close cooperation, can solve the most challenging logistics projects.
