Each summer Valmet hires hundreds of summer trainees to work in its Finnish locations. The summer trainees work in engineering, production, procurement and logistics, product development, sales, finance and administration. In May 2020, Valmet was chosen as the fifth most attractive employer by the engineering students in Finland.

This summer, many of the trainees started their summer job by working virtually. Valmet offered support, materials and tools as a help for effective virtual working, as well as made sure that safety issues were considered and trained well. Virtual coffee breaks in the teams were also scheduled.

“Summer trainees are a very important asset for Valmet. We get valuable help in the summer when many Valmeteers are on holiday, and at the same time the students can develop their skills in a truly international and rapidly developing working environment. Even in these unprecedented Covid times, Valmet has chosen to be socially responsible towards students and employs a significant number of summer trainees, since it is important that young students get the chance to explore working life”, says Julia Macharey, Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Operational Development at Valmet.

The team working with the Finnish summer trainees relies heavily on feedback – both trainee and applicant – to make the program more modern and engaging every year.

“Each year we receive thousands of applications from those interested in pursuing a career with us. In recent years, we have worked to improve all aspects of the summer trainee experience from our initial online campaign to video interviews and modern onboarding. This year we repeated the Valmet-hosted career fair, which once again received good feedback for the possibility to meet our people and to get a feel for what it is like to work at Valmet,” says Maria Tuominen, Manager, EMEA Talent Management, Valmet.
