Holmen Paper’s Hallsta mill officially inaugurated the rebuilt PM 12 on 22 November 2001. In the ceremony, Mr. Greger Kling, the managing director of Bold Printing Group, a long-time customer of Hallsta, cut a ribbon to symbolize the reinstatement of the enhanced production line.
Holmen's EUR 35 million modernization of PM 12 was carried out by Metso Paper and consisted of a new generation OptiSoft SlimLine soft calender, an OptiReel reeler and a rebuild of the former section. The main emphasis of the rebuild was to further improve paper quality. Kling also emphasized the productive partnership between the two parties. The first trials with the improved paper have exceeded Holmen Paper’s expectations; according to Kling a major step in the paper quality has been achieved.
Mr. Lars Erik Roos, the mill manager at Hallstavik, expressed his compliments to the vast number of people who have contributed to the project. He described the project as a "fantastic success" and acknowledged the good start-up and positive market feedback.
Mr. Kjell Buhre, the production manager of the Hallsta PM 12, finds two reasons for the improved runnability of the paper machine. First of all, the improved OptiReel reeling process has significantly decreased the number of breaks. Secondly, the strength properties of the paper have increased due to the improved forming process and soft calender.
The OptiSoft SlimLine soft calender at Hallstavik is the 100th soft calender delivered by Metso Paper. The limited space favored the compact design of the new soft calender generation. The calender is equipped with the newest soft calendering technology, such as sliding bearings for the SymRolls and thermorolls, and the FoilForce1 ropeless web threading system.
Including Hallsta PM 12 running, 7 of the 15 newspaper machines in Sweden now possess a soft calender. The advantages of the soft calendering, such as improved strength and surface properties, are becoming particularly obvious with the present trend toward lighter basis weights.
Holmen Paper is a leading European producer of woodcontaining printing papers. The Hallsta mill has four paper machines with a total annual capacity of 665,000 t. The furnish for standard newsprint consists of DIP and TMP and the customers are mainly in Europe.
