The Metso Paper -supplied fine paper machine at Kymi Paper (subsidiary of UPM-Kymmene) Kuusankoski mill in Finland has set a new world speed record for fine paper machines. PM 8 ran at 1541 m/min (92,5 km/h, 5056 fpm) for 24 hours on 26-27 November, producing 65 g/m2 precoated base paper.
Valmet supplied PM 8 to Kuusankoski in 1983. Its latest modernization was started up in September 2001 and its design speed is 1 500 m/min. In connection with the rebuild a new generation off-machine coating line was delivered.
"We were not intentionally striving for a world record", says production manager Stefan Fors. "The design speed was exceeded already a little over a year from the start - and what is best, the record speed and top product quality went hand in hand."
The world speed records for all major grades – newsprint, lwc, sc and woodfree fine paper as well as base paper – are held by paper machines supplied by Metso Paper.
