Metso Paper (formerly Valmet Corporation) will rebuild a paper machine at Metsä-Serla’s Kyro mill in Finland. The order is aimed at improving the quality of production and is valued at over EUR 20 million. The rebuilt machine, which produces coated and uncoated wallpaper base, will start up in March 2002, following a one month shutdown.
Metso Paper’s total delivery will include extensive rebuilds of the PM 3’s wet end and coating section, short circulation equipment, size and coating color machine circulation, process ventilation, renewals of the quality control and machine control systems and mechanical drives. Participating in the delivery will be business units located at Jyväskylä, Järvenpää, Valkeakoski, Raisio, Turku and Tampere - all of them in Finland.
The Kyro PM 3 has a trim width of 4 meters and a design speed for the new parts of 1000 m/min. The machine’s annual production is approx. 100,000 tons.
The wet end rebuild will include two OptiFlo headboxes and an MB Former. An OptiFeed short circulation system is being delivered for the formation of the wallpaper base layer. The size and coating color machine circulation will be delivered by Valmet-Raisio and the wire section air systems by Metso Paper’s Turku unit. Metso Automation will deliver the PaperIQ quality control system and the metsoDNA process automation. Metso Drives will deliver the drives and spare parts for the wire and coating sections.
The rebuild will improve the quality of the base paper, especially its dimensional stability and base formation, and the surface properties of the coated wallpaper. Valmet previously carried out an extensive rebuild of PM 3 in 1984, and also rebuilt the mill’s BM 1, which produces folding boxboard, in 1996.
