Metso Paper will supply JSC Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill in Segezha, Russian Karelia with an extensive rebuild of their PM 9 production line for extensible sack kraft paper. The rebuilt production line will be started up in early summer 2008. The total value of the order is about EUR 11 million. The equipment delivery contract was signed in Helsinki on June 5, 2007.
The Metso delivery will include the complete equipment for high-consistency refining, a FormMaster breast roll shaking system for wire section, a dryer section rebuild, and automation and quality control systems. Erection supervision, start-up assistance and training are in the Metso package as well.
PM 9 was originally supplied by Metso (Valmet) in 1972. It has a wire width of 7.1 m. The modernisation implicitly allows to increase paper machine speed to up to 750 m/min and to raise productivity to up to 550 t/d. Nevertheless, on the first stage of modernisation the speed of paper machine and productivity will not be increased.
Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill selected Metso thanks to their high technology and the good experiences gained in the high-consistency refining project in 2001-2002 and the modernization of PM 10 and its stock preparation line in 2003-2004.
The Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill, formerly known as Segezhabumprom, is located in northwestern Russia in the Republic of Karelia, about 700 km north of St. Petersburg. Nowadays the Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill is a part of Pulp and Paper Industry division of the InvestForestIndustry holding. The Mill produces standard sack paper, with a basis weight range of 60–120 gsm on two machines, PM 9 and PM 11, and also semi-extensible sack paper on PM 10 (also supplied by Valmet, in 1973, and upgraded by Metso in 2002). After the modernization of PM 9, two machines will produce semi-extensible sack paper and production can reach 370,000 tons per year. Finished products are sold both domestically and in export markets.
Metso is a global engineering and technology corporation with 2006 net sales of approximately EUR 5 billion. Its 25,500 employees in more than 50 countries serve customers in the pulp and paper industry, rock and minerals processing, the energy industry and selected other industries. www.metso.com
