Metso Paper will rebuild UPM-Kymmene’s Rauma mill PM 2. The modernization of the SC paper machine will improve paper quality, machine efficiency and running speed. The rebuilt machine will start up in spring 2004. The value of the order is in excess of EUR 20 million.
The quality of PM 2 will be raised to the top of its class, concerning e.g. printability and printing press runnability. Machine efficiency will be improved through better runnability and stability. The average operating speed will be raised by approx. 150 m/min, and annual capacity by some 30,000 tonnes.
The order comprises the following parts: OptiFlo headbox, to improve paper structure, profiles and formation, and wet end stability OptiFormer wire section, to improve paper structure, formation, water removal capacity, and machine runnability Rebuild of 3rd press nip to the shoe press, to improve capacity and runnability Installation of HiRun Blow Boxes at the beginning of the dryer section, to improve runnability; and at the end of the dryer section a DoubleForce tail threading system to improve runnability and tail threading Change of wet end grease-lubricated rolls to oil lubrication, and a new lubrication system for the machine’s wet end Metso Automation’s metsoDNA control system for the headbox
PM 2, which was originally supplied by Beloit and started up in 1971, has a wire width of 9.15 m and a construction speed of 1400 m/min. Valmet rebuilt the machine extensively in 1990.
UPM-Kymmene's Rauma mill has four paper machines, two of which produce light weight coated magazine papers (LWC) while the other two produce supercalendered magazine papers (SC) for offset and rotogravure printing. PM 2 produces SC rotogravure papers, which are used by magazine and directory publishers worldwide. The annual paper production capacity of the Rauma mill is 1.2 million tonnes and the mill employs 1,200 people.
