Valmet introduces a grate combustion vision application for waste-to-energy grate boilers

Valmet Oyj’s trade press release on March 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. EET

Valmet introduces a new Valmet Grate Combustion Vision application for waste-to-energy plants' moving grate boilers. The application detects the flame and measures the flame front location on the grate. This improves flame monitoring and helps to optimize combustion, resulting in maximized grate capacity and less down time.

“We wanted to develop a tool to increase the load and waste throughput without the risk of overloading the grate. Valmet Grate Combustion Vision recognizes the flame front and indicates where the combustion is happening. The flame front location can be controlled by individually adjusting the speed of each grate. This is essential when maximizing load in waste-to-energy grate boiler where fuel quality varies and can’t be predicted,” says Timo Ojanen, Technical Product Manager, Valmet.

Clear vision of the grate

The application is used with the Valmet Visible Thermal Imaging System, a rugged, air-cooled, HD visible camera paired with a high-resolution thermal sensor for real-time temperature measurements. It is engineered for durability and longevity inside hot and dusty environments, providing a tool for comprehensive observation and analysis of furnace environments.

Valmet Visible Thermal Imaging System and the new application provide improved visibility to the process from start-up to full load conditions. The measured information of the flame front location can be utilized in throughput maximation.

Real-time flame detection and monitoring at Tammervoima

The application has been developed with and piloted in Tammervoima’s waste-to-energy plant in Finland.

“Our plant is one of the most reliable ones and Valmet’s camera system with developed features supports our target to run continuously in future,” says Mika Pekkinen, CEO, Tammervoima.

The customer wanted to avoid unnecessary shutdowns and process disturbances while improving the visibility to the grate. The application measures the flame front location and combustion intensity parameters from the camera image and gives a clearer vision to the grate.
